The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival, Autumn Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, August Festival, August Meeting, Moon Chasing Festival, Moon Playing Festival, Moon Worship Festival, Daughter's Festival, or Reunion Festival, is a traditional cultural festival prevalent among many ethnic groups in China and countries in the Sinosphere, falling on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar; because it falls in the middle of autumn, it is so named. In some places, the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the 16th of August.

Since ancient times, the Mid-Autumn Festival has been associated with customs such as moon worship, moon viewing, moon worship, eating mooncakes, appreciating osmanthus flowers, and drinking osmanthus wine, which have been passed down to this day. The Mid-Autumn Festival, with its symbolism of the moon's roundness representing family reunion, serves as a vehicle for expressing longing for one's hometown and loved ones, and for praying for a bountiful harvest and happiness, becoming a rich and invaluable cultural heritage. The Mid-Autumn Festival, along with the Dragon Boat Festival, Spring Festival, and Qingming Festival, is considered one of China's four major traditional festivals.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, a time for family happiness and reunion, and is associated with the customs of eating mooncakes and admiring the moon. Folk tales about Chang'e flying to the moon and the Jade Rabbit pounding medicine also circulate, reflecting people's pursuit and yearning for a happy life. Such a meaningful festival should be cherished and passed down by our collective efforts. We should work together to carry on this meaningful tradition.

The full moon on the 15th of the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2021

The 2021 Mid-Autumn Festival will feature a full moon on the 15th.

This year, the fullest moon will appear at 7:54:32 AM Beijing time on September 21, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. People often say that the fullest moon appears on the 16th, and indeed, the time of the fullest moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival does not always fall on the 15th of the lunar month.

2021 Mid-Autumn Festival Moon Appreciation Time (Fullest Moon): 7:54:32 AM Beijing Time, September 21

Why does this happen?

Because the moon's orbit around the earth is elliptical, its speed of revolution is uneven. According to Kepler's law: when the moon is closer to the earth, its speed is faster; when the moon is farther from the earth, its speed is slower. The difference between the longest and shortest time it takes for the moon to orbit the earth is 13 hours, so the time of the full moon each month varies. If the moon's 'pace' is slower before the 'full moon', then the time from 'new moon' to 'full moon' will be longer, so the phenomenon of a full moon on the 15th, 16th, or even 17th can occur.

Mid-Autumn Festival is a day for family reunion, Kangsheng Jiutai Once again, best wishes to everyone: May your families be happy and your lives be full of joy!

Thank you all!
