Double Ninth Festival | Double Ninth Festival, Deep Respect for the Elderly
On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, it is the Double Ninth Festival again. Also known as the "Climbing High Festival," Chrysanthemum Festival, or Cornels Festival, it has a history of over two thousand years. China designates the ninth day of the ninth lunar month as the Double Ninth Festival, wishing all the elderly in the world longevity, happiness, and companionship.

The Double Ninth Festival is a traditional Chinese folk festival, celebrated annually on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. The number "nine" in the Book of Changes is considered a yang number. "Nine nine" represents two yang numbers overlapping, hence "Double Ninth"; it is also called "Double Nine" because both the day and month are nine. Nine nine returns to the true, one element begins anew. The ancients believed the Double Ninth Festival was an auspicious day. Ancient folk customs included climbing high for blessings, worshipping gods and ancestors, and banquets for longevity. These traditions have been passed down, with the addition of respecting the elderly. Climbing high to enjoy autumn and expressing gratitude and respect for the elderly are the two major themes of the Double Ninth Festival today.
Originating from celestial body worship, the Double Ninth Festival began in ancient times, became widespread during the Western Han Dynasty, and flourished after the Tang Dynasty. According to existing historical
materials and evidence, autumn there were activities to hold harvest ceremonies to Heaven and ancestors in ancient times; during the ninth month when the harvest was abundant,
the ancients would hold ceremonies to worship the Heavenly Emperor and ancestors to thank them for their blessings. This is the original form of the Double Ninth Festival as an autumn harvest ceremony
and existed. The Tang Dynasty was an important period for the integration and standardization of traditional festival customs, the main part of which has been passed down
to this day.
The Double Ninth Festival, in its historical development and evolution, has blended various folk customs into one, carrying rich cultural connotations. In folk beliefs, "nine" is the largest number, implying longevity and conveying people's wishes for the health and longevity of the elderly. On May 20, 2006, the Double Ninth Festival was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists by the State Council. In 2012, the revised Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly passed by the National People's Congress Standing Committee stipulates that the ninth day of the ninth lunar month each year is Senior Citizen's Day 。
